His main research areas are the sediment mesofauna of shallow lakes and the hydrobiology of watercourses.

In a series of surveys he has explored sediment mesofauna of several large, but shallow?? lakes of Hungary. He was the first to determine the mosaic variance in waterbodies of Lake Velence, Hungary.

Nevéhez fűződik több magyarországi nagy kiterjedésű, de sík vízű tó üledékének mezofaunájának vizsgálatsorozattal történő feltárása. Elsőként sikerült megállapítania a Velencei-tó víztereinek mozaikszerű eltéréseit.

In his researches on watercourses he has studied the Danube, and its tributaries, and other smaller Hungarian streams. He had a significant role in exploring the hydrobiological status of the Hungarian section of the Danube, and in the hydrobiological study of Fertő-Hanság in 1972 both as organizer and researcher.

Az úgynevezett áramló vizekre vonatkozó kutatásai a Dunára, annak mellékágrendszerére, illetve más magyarországi kisvízfolyásokra terjedtek ki. Jelentős tevékenységet végzett a magyar Duna-szakasz hidrobiológiai állapot-feltárásában, valamint a Fertő-Hanság 1972-es hidrobiológiai feltárásának kutatásszervezői és kutatói munkájában.

He has been a hydrobiology expert in discussions concerning the barrage at Bős-Nagymaros.

A bős–nagymarosi vízlépcsőrendszer kérdéskörénél hidrobiológus szakértőként vett részt.

Between 1978 and 1991 he had been director of the Botanical Institute, later called the Centre for Ecological and Botanical Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

1978 és 1991 között az MTA Botanikai Kutatóintézetének, majd Ökológiai és Botanikai Kutatóintézetének igazgatója.
